I caught that same hint of the cheerleader’s shirts earlier… but what I missed was that this town/school is called Tandy Gardens. It’s written on like, page 01 of the entire comic (I checked back, just now) but in dialogue the place is only ever referred to as “Tandy”. Until this page and your comment, I wondered what the “G” stood for.
I can also say with complete honestly I’d never heard the term “transgender” in my life until at least the 2010s (when I was in my 30s). It may technically have been around since the 1950s or 60s, but I don’t think it had much media penetration. This comic debuted in 2002, so I guess A&R heard about it sooner than I did.
Holy crap, I’m oblivious.
It didn’t even hit me until *this* page that the initials for Tandy Gardens have another potential meaning.
